Morro Bay Day - Old Vienna Restaurant, Shell Beach

September 26th, 2002

This day was spent enjoying the sights and sounds of the small town of Morro Bay, located approximately 12 miles north of SLO.  The group arrived in the late morning for a chance to take in the unique qualities of an old fishing town located on the Pacific Coast.  Morro Bay is known for the striking Morro Rock that stands tall and proud overlooking the small bay where commercial and private fisherman brave the sometimes rough seas to bring us the fruits of their labor.

The group had a good time enjoying the sights and sounds of the day, and the infamous salt taffy and candy that the town provides.  Twice a year Morro Bay also acts as host to 2 "tall ships" that travel from Southern California all the way to Washington State.  These ships are exact replicas of 17th Century cargo ships that traveled the open seas of the world.  Daily tours are provided as well as passage on the ships as deck hand for the truly adventerous!

After the day our group returned to SLO in anticipation for Farmer's Market, held each and every Thursday night (except Thanksgiving) here in the downtown area.  Farmer's Market provides fresh fruits and vegtables from all over the state, as well as seasonal displays and musical entertainment.  Many visitors make it a plan to stop and visit the market while they are in town.  In addition to all the fresh produce, many well known local restaurants set up "shop" outdoors with their various specialties for all to enjoy.  BBQ is the best known, although one can purchase chinese, italian, or mexican food all as a part of the evening.

After the visit downtown - everyone was ready for the dinner planned at The Old Vienna Restaurant, located in Shell Beach (approximately 15 miles south of SLO).  We arrived for dinner to find our group already assembled with a few new faces to enjoy the fine german food!
